On 11 July 1990, Sarah MacDiarmid disappeared from Kananook station. She was last seen walking to the station carpark. The station was featured in the first episode of the Australian TV series Sensing Murder, which aired on Network Ten in September 2004.

In 2007 the station was upgraded as part of the EastLink road project linking the north-eastern suburb of Ringwood to Frankston. The station building was dismantled and replaced with a shelter, and a freeway noise protection wall was constructed.
