Joseph and His Brothers - Three Famous Events

Three Famous Events

In the plot of the novel, the author describes the three events depicted by famous painters throughout the course of the recent centuries, namely (i) Jacob, blessing Joseph's second son, as he himself had been blessed by his father Isaac instead of his twin brother Esau; (ii) the event where Joseph is sold by his brothers (to Arabian merchandisers, going to Egypt), and (iii) the moment where the wife of the highest Egyptian custodian to the Pharao (see Potiphar's wife) is trying to seduce Joseph, and he flees leaving his cloak. These three events are painted in the following gallery:

  • Jacob blessing Joseph's second son first. Rembrandt, 1656

  • F. Overbeck, 1816/17: Joseph is sold by his brothers.

  • Philipp Veit, 1816/17: Joseph fleeing from Potiphar's wife.

Famous quotes containing the words famous and/or events:

The essence of the physicality of the most famous blonde in the world is a wholesome eroticism blurred a little round the edges by the fact she is not quite sure what eroticism is. This gives her her tentative luminosity and what makes her, somehow, always more like her own image in the mirror than she is like herself.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

The system was breaking down. The one who had wandered alone past so many happenings and events began to feel, backing up along the primal vein that led to his center, the beginning of hiccup that would, if left to gather, explode the center to the extremities of life, the suburbs through which one makes one’s way to where the country is.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
