Geography
Joplin is located at 37°4′40″N 94°30′40″W / 37.07778°N 94.51111°W / 37.07778; -94.51111 (37.077760, −94.511024). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.68 square miles (92.41 km2), of which, 35.56 square miles (92.10 km2) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 km2) is water. The city is drained by Joplin Creek, Turkey Creek, Silver Creek and Shoal Creek. Joplin is the center of what is regionally known as the Four State Area: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas.
Joplin is located north of Highway I-44, its passage to the west into Oklahoma. In recent years, the residential development of Joplin have spread north to about Webb City. The now-decommissioned U.S. Route 66 once passed through Joplin, and the city is mentioned in the song "Route 66".
