John Vanbiesbrouck - Early Life

Early Life

Vanbiesbrouck was born in Detroit, Michigan to a Belgian immigrant bricklayer, Robert Vanbiesbrouck, and an Italian immigrant Sara. He grew-up with two brothers; the oldest, Frank, who was also a goaltender in youth hockey. He inspired Vanbiesbrouck to play goaltender. John later noted that he learned more about goaltending just from watching Frank than any coaching could, adding that no one ever helped him more to become the player he was.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

I could be, I discovered, by turns stern, loving, wise, silly, youthful, aged, racial, universal, indulgent, strict, with a remarkably easy and often cunning detachment ... various ways that an adult, spurred by guilt, by annoyance, by condescension, by loneliness, deals with the prerogatives of power and love.
    —Gerald Early (20th century)

Here lies the body of William Jones
Who all his life collected bones,
Till Death, that grim and boney spectre,
    That universal bone collector,
Boned old Jones, so neat and tidy,
And here he lies, all bona fide.
—Anonymous. “Epitaph on William Jones,” from Eleanor Broughton’s Varia (1925)
