The Democratic National Convention and President Obama

Hunter provided the closing benediction to the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

On January 20, 2009, Hunter offered a blessing over President-Elect Obama during an intimate, pre-inauguration service held at St. John's Episcopal Church, located on Lafayette Square across from the White House. The service is a tradition for those about to become President.

At the service at St. John’s, Hunter prayed the following blessing over the nation’s 44th President.

Famous quotes containing the words democratic, national, convention and/or president:

He rejected, if he did not despise, democratic principles; advocated a government as strong, almost, as a monarchy.... He believed in authority, and he had no faith in the aggregate wisdom of masses of men.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

[Wellesley College] is about as meaningful to the educational process in America as a perfume factory is to the national economy.
    Nora Ephron (b. 1941)

The metaphor of the king as the shepherd of his people goes back to ancient Egypt. Perhaps the use of this particular convention is due to the fact that, being stupid, affectionate, gregarious, and easily stampeded, the societies formed by sheep are most like human ones.
    Northrop Frye (b. 1912)

The future of America may or may not bring forth a black President, a woman President, a Jewish President, but it most certainly always will have a suburban President. A President whose senses have been defined by the suburbs, where lakes and public baths mutate into back yards and freeways, where walking means driving, where talking means telephoning, where watching means TV, and where living means real, imitation life.
    Arthur Kroker (b. 1945)
