He applied to the Fresno State University, to study film directing, but enrolled at the Theater and Arts Department by mistake.

On December 27, 2007, at a news conference in Tokyo, Odagiri announced his engagement to actress Yuu Kashii, who is exactly 11 years his junior. They were subsequently married on February 16, 2008, which was also a birthday for both of them. In February 2011, their first child, a son, was born.
