Bribing: Guilty, But A Clean Record
In January 2002, Jan Pieter De Nul, together with his brother Dirk De Nul, was convicted to three years of suspended prison sentence for bribing Willy Goedgezelschap, the Belgian federal tax official responsible for checking the Jan De Nul Group tax filings. Goedgezelschap was reportedly bought cars for a value of 370000 €, plus two houses.
On April 16 2003, the Ghent court of appeal still found De Nul guilty, but it suspended the conviction for five years. The court took into account his crucial role in managing a specialised dredging business, the main source of employment for many people, and the fact that the tax official was said to have taken the initiative for the bribing.

Famous quotes containing the words clean and/or record:
“Happy is the novelist who manages to preserve an actual love letter that he received when he was young within a work of fiction, embedded in it like a clean bullet in flabby flesh and quite secure there, among spurious lives.”
—Vladimir Nabokov (18991977)
“Not marble nor the gilded monuments
Of princes shall outlive this powerful rime;
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone, besmeared with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor wars quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
