College
Cruz was drafted straight out of high school in 1991 by the California Angels, but did not sign; instead, choosing to play baseball for Arizona State University. Cruz was drafted in the 1st round (32nd overall) of the 1994 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants, signing the next month.
