Baseball

The Jacksonville Dolphins baseball team began play in 1957, and was independent until joining the Sun Belt Conference in 1978. The Dolphins were affiliated with that conference until 1998, when they joined the Atlantic Sun Conference.

The Dolphins have participated in 13 NCAA tournaments, beginning in 1968. Jacksonville's best showing in the NCAA tournament came in the 1976 South Regional, when they were one game away from the College World Series, but were eliminated by Auburn 7–5. The Dolphins also were part of the NCAA tournament in 1972, 1976, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011.

Famous quotes containing the word baseball:

I’ve gradually risen from lower-class background to lower-class foreground.
Marvin Cohen, U.S. author and humorist. Baseball the Beautiful, Links Books (1970)

Baseball is the religion that worships the obvious and gives thanks that things are exactly as they seem. Instead of celebrating mysteries, baseball rejoices in the absence of mysteries and trusts that, if we watch what is laid before our eyes, down to the last detail, we will cultivate the gift of seeing things as they really are.
Thomas Boswell, U.S. sports journalist. “The Church of Baseball,” Baseball: An Illustrated History, ed. Geoffrey C. Ward, Knopf (1994)

One of the baseball-team owners approached me and said: “If you become baseball commissioner, you’re going to have to deal with 28 big egos,” and I said, “For me, that’s a 72% reduction.”
    George Mitchell (b. 1933)
