Irredentism is also expressed by some Chicano "nationalists" and Mexican-American activists in the Aztlán movement. They call for the return of formerly Mexican-dominated lands in the Southwestern United States to Mexico. These lands were annexed by the US in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became the present-day states of California, Texas, Nevada and Utah; and parts of Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Famous quotes containing the words north and/or american:

When the Somalians were merely another hungry third world people, we sent them guns. Now that they are falling down dead from starvation, we send them troops. Some may see in this a tidy metaphor for the entire relationship between north and south. But it would make a whole lot more sense nutritionally—as well as providing infinitely more vivid viewing—if the Somalians could be persuaded to eat the troops.
    Barbara Ehrenreich (b. 1941)

An American Virgin would never dare command; an American Venus would never dare exist.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)
