Mission
Funded by the State under the National Development Plan, the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) operated research funding initiatives which supported talented researchers in their early stage career formation across Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels in the sciences, engineering and technology. They were also designed to ensure that Ireland would become an internationally attractive location for high-level research. The emphasis of its funding programmes was on exploratory research aimed at yielding new concepts, findings and innovations within Ireland. The main scheme which IRCSET operated was called The Embark Initiative. IRCSET also operated an Enterprise Partnership Scheme where it co-funded researchers in co-operation with leading industry partners.
Following its inception in 2002, the Council had allocated €60 million to support the career formation of over 1,000 researchers in Ireland. Funding was made available through a series of competitive calls for applicants. Selection for funding was based on merit and the decision process was overseen by independent assessment panels.
The IRCSET chairperson was Professor Jane Grimson, of Trinity College Dublin.
