Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology or simply IRCSET was an independent and autonomous research funding and monitoring body established in June 2001 by the Minister for Education and Science to promote science and engineering research in Ireland. IRCSET was one of the two research councils in Ireland through which Irish Government provided its state-funded scholarships to a limited number of researchers each year who are designated as Government of Ireland Scholar. In March 2012, the Irish Government merged IRCSET with its sister organisation, the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS), thereby forming the Irish Research Council. IRCSET through its main program The Embark Initiative mainly aimed to encourage doctoral and masters level researchers to initiate and continue their research work in Irish Higher Educational Institutes. In addition to doctoral and masters level funding, IRCSET also provided support and financial assistance to post-doctoral researchers as well.

“O Paddy dear, an did ye hear the news thats goin round?
The shamrock is by law forbid to grow on Irish ground!

“The working woman may be quick to see any problems with children as her fault because she isnt as available to them. However, the fact that she is employed is rarely central to the conflict. And overall, studies show, being employed doesnt have negative effects on children; carefully done research consistently makes this clear.”
—Grace Baruch (20th century)
“There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....”
—Allen Tate (18991979)
“Mining today is an affair of mathematics, of finance, of the latest in engineering skill. Cautious men behind polished desks in San Francisco figure out in advance the amount of metal to a cubic yard, the number of yards washed a day, the cost of each operation. They have no need of grubstakes.”
—Merle Colby, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
“If we had a reliable way to label our toys good and bad, it would be easy to regulate technology wisely. But we can rarely see far enough ahead to know which road leads to damnation. Whoever concerns himself with big technology, either to push it forward or to stop it, is gambling in human lives.”
—Freeman Dyson (b. 1923)
