Internet In The People's Republic Of China
The first connection of the mainland of the People's Republic of China with the Internet was established on 20 September 1987 between ICA Beijing and Karlsruhe University in Germany, under the leadership of Prof. Werner Zorn and Prof. Wang Yunfeng. Since then the Internet in China has grown to host the largest base of net users in the world. The first email attempt was successfully sent out on 14 September 1987 with the contents "Across the Great Wall, we can reach every corner in the world" (S: 越过长城,走向世界, T: 越過長城,走向世界, P: Yuèguò Chángchéng, Zǒuxiàng Shìjiè). In the past decade, the Internet has emerged as a new cultural phenomenon in mainland China, much like in the West.

Famous quotes containing the words people, republic and/or china:
“If pimps and thieves everywhere were always punished, honest people would all believe themselves always to be innocent.”
—Albert Camus (19131960)
“Universal empire is the prerogative of a writer. His concerns are with all mankind, and though he cannot command their obedience, he can assign them their duty. The Republic of Letters is more ancient than monarchy, and of far higher character in the world than the vassal court of Britain.”
—Thomas Paine (17371809)
“In a country where misery and want were the foundation of the social structure, famine was periodic, death from starvation common, disease pervasive, thievery normal, and graft and corruption taken for granted, the elimination of these conditions in Communist China is so striking that negative aspects of the new rule fade in relative importance.”
—Barbara Tuchman (19121989)
