International Campaign To Abolish Nuclear Weapons - Nuclear Abolition Day

Nuclear Abolition Day

ICAN coordinates Nuclear Abolition Day, an annual global day of action in June for a treaty banning nuclear weapons. Events in past years have included non-violent street demonstrations, benefit concerts and recitals, picnics, vigils, marches and educational workshops. According to ICAN, "the aim is to raise public awareness about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and build political support for negotiations for a treaty banning these weapons."

Famous quotes containing the words nuclear, abolition and/or day:

The problems of the world, AIDS, cancer, nuclear war, pollution, are, finally, no more solvable than the problem of a tree which has borne fruit: the apples are overripe and they are falling—what can be done?... Nothing can be done, and nothing needs to be done. Something is being done—the organism is preparing to rest.
    David Mamet (b. 1947)

It was a marvel, an enigma in abolition latitudes, that the slaves did not rise en-masse, at the beginning of hostilities.
    Rebecca Latimer Felton (1835–1930)

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)
