Inigo

Inigo is a Welsh male name that is an adaptation of the Basque Iñigo, in turn a rendering of the Basque name Eneko.

The ultimate origins remain obscure, in part due to the lack of early records in the Basque language. The name appears in Latin, as Enneco, and Arabic, as Wannaqo (ونقه), reports of Íñigo Arista, who became the first king of Pamplona in the first half of the 9th century, and can be compared with its feminine form, Oneca. It was frequently represented in medieval documents as Ignatius, (Spanish "Ignacio") which is thought to come from the Roman name Egnatius, from the Latin ignotus, meaning "unknowing", or from the Latin word for fire, ignis. This may represent the ultimate origin of the Basque Eneko, or the familiar Ignatius may simply have served as a convenient substitution, with the two names having independent origins.

The Euskaltzaindia gives the name as Eneko (original Basque name used at least from medieval times) and also as Iñigo (Basque-Spanish variant) without the capital accent found with Spanish Íñigo.
