Ice Hockey Goaltending Equipment - Stick

Stick

The special hockey stick goaltenders use has a blade that is approximately 3+1⁄2 inches (8.9 cm) wide. The lower 25 to 28 inches (63 to 71 centimetres) of the shaft is widened to provide more blocking surface. This area is called the paddle. Although traditional goalie sticks were usually made completely of wood, most modern sticks are reinforced with graphite and fiberglass and the paddle and blade are injected with foam to make them lighter. Recently, manufacturers have begun to produce sticks made completely from composite materials, which are more durable. Composite sticks are less durable than other types and much more likely to break.

Famous quotes containing the word stick:

Some, it seems to me, elect their rulers for their crookedness. But I think that a straight stick makes the best cane, and an upright man the best ruler.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

It is commonly said, and more particularly by Lord Shaftesbury, that ridicule is the best test of truth; for that it will not stick where it is not just. I deny it. A truth learned in a certain light, and attacked in certain words, by men of wit and humour, may, and often doth, become ridiculous, at least so far, that the truth is only remembered and repeated for the sake of the ridicule.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)

No reporter of my generation, whatever his genius, ever really rated spats and a walking stick until he had covered both a lynching and a revolution.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)
