The Inn began in the early 19th century as the “Suspension Bridge House.” Around the turn of the 20th century it was renamed the Hurley Hotel, featuring a tavern and a one chair barber shop. In the early 1970s it was renamed the Hurley Mountain Inn. "Hollywood scoured the United States for just the right spot to feature in the movie Tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman, Bill Murray, Charles Durning and Jessica Lange. Famous quotes containing the word history:

History is more or less bunk. It’s tradition. We don’t want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker’s damn is the history we make today.
    Henry Ford (1863–1947)

A man will not need to study history to find out what is best for his own culture.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

He wrote in prison, not a History of the World, like Raleigh, but an American book which I think will live longer than that. I do not know of such words, uttered under such circumstances, and so copiously withal, in Roman or English or any history.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
