Hugo Vieira - Football Career

Football Career

Hugo played during his early career with Sporting Clube de Braga, making his first team - and first division - debuts at the age of 19. He moved in 1997 to Italy's U.C. Sampdoria, where he was regularly used during his three-year stint, albeit suffering Serie A relegation in his second season.

In 2000, Hugo returned to Portugal, joining Sporting Clube de Portugal, and appearing scarcely for the 2002 league champions (also helping to the cup the same season). After six seasons, he left as a free agent to Vitória de Setúbal, where he also was used sparingly.

In 2008–09, Hugo played the most games he had in years, but spent most of the season as defensive midfielder. Aged 33, he had his first second division experience, signing with S.C. Beira-Mar, and helping the Aveiro side win the league in his first year and return to the top level, after a three-year absence.

Famous quotes containing the words football and/or career:

People stress the violence. That’s the smallest part of it. Football is brutal only from a distance. In the middle of it there’s a calm, a tranquility. The players accept pain. There’s a sense of order even at the end of a running play with bodies stewn everywhere. When the systems interlock, there’s a satisfaction to the game that can’t be duplicated. There’s a harmony.
    Don Delillo (b. 1926)

Whether lawyer, politician or executive, the American who knows what’s good for his career seeks an institutional rather than an individual identity. He becomes the man from NBC or IBM. The institutional imprint furnishes him with pension, meaning, proofs of existence. A man without a company name is a man without a country.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
