Hoklo People

The Hoklo people or Hokkien people (endonym Hok-ló lang, Hō-ló lang, or Ho̍h-ló lang) are Han Chinese people whose traditional Ancestral homes are in southern Fujian of South China. They are also known by various endonym as Hok-ló lang, Hō-ló lang, or Ho̍h-ló lang, or other related terms such as Min-nan people (閩南人) or Hokkien Lang (福建人).

In narrower scope, the Hoklo people refers mainly to people who speak and use the Hokkien dialect of Min Nan Chinese spoken in southern Fujian, Taiwan, and by many overseas Chinese throughout Southeast Asia.

In wider scope, the Hoklo people can include speakers of other Min Nan languages, such as Zhongshan Min, Zhenan Min, Teochew dialect, and Hainanese.

Famous quotes containing the word people:

What passes for identity in America is a series of myths about one’s heroic ancestors. It’s astounding to me, for example, that so many people really seem to believe that the country was founded by a band of heroes who wanted to be free. That happens not to be true. What happened was that some people left Europe because they couldn’t stay there any longer and had to go someplace else to make it. They were hungry, they were poor, they were convicts.
    James Baldwin (1924–1987)
