Modern Turkey (1922-present)
The official starting point for the Republic of Turkey was on October 29, 1923, founded and first led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Westernization was a primary goal of Atatürk, as the government was completely reformed under a secular structure, the Ottoman fez was abolished, full rights for women politically were established, and most importantly the creation of a new writing system for Turkish based upon the Latin alphabet.
