Heygate Estate - Regeneration

Regeneration

The Elephant and Castle regeneration is a £1.5billion scheme to redevelop the area around the Elephant and Castle road junction. The first phase includes the complete demolition of the Heygate Estate, to be replaced with 2,500 new homes. Its demolition cost approximately £8.5 million, with an additional £35 million needed to rehouse the residents.

Heygate residents were originally promised new homes as part of the regeneration, but these had not been built by the time they were 'decanted' off the estate in 2007.

A council blunder in Feb 2013 revealed that it had sold the 9 hectare estate to developers for just £50m, having spent £44m emptying the site and planning the redevelopment.

In Feb 2013, the last remaining residents on the estate appeared at a public inquiry into the Compulsory Purchase Order issued on their homes. The residents are part of local group 'Better Elephant', which is proposing alternatives to demolition in its Neighbourhood Plan. The outcome of the public inquiry and decision on whether the Compulsory Purchase Order is to be confirmed is expected in late July 2013.

Famous quotes containing the word regeneration:

Typically, the hero of the fairy tale achieves a domestic, microcosmic triumph, and the hero of myth a world-historical, macrocosmic triumph. Whereas the former—the youngest or despised child who becomes the master of extraordinary powers—prevails over his personal oppressors, the latter brings back from his adventure the means for the regeneration of his society as a whole.
    Joseph Campbell (1904–1987)

The republic, as I at least understand it, means association, of which liberty is only an element, a necessary antecedent. It means association, a new philosophy of life, a divine Ideal that shall move the world, the only means of regeneration vouchsafed to the human race.
    Giuseppe Mazzini (1805–1872)
