Famous quotes containing the word death:

    To die, to sleep—
    No more, and by a sleep to say we end
    The heartache and the thousand natural shocks
    That flesh is heir to—’tis a consummation
    Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep.
    To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there’s the rub,
    For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
    When we have shuffled off this mortal coil
    Must give us pause.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    To fear death, my friends, is only to think ourselves wise, without being wise: for it is to think that we know what we do not know. And what is this but that shameful ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know?
    Socrates (469–399 B.C.)

    and so this tree—
    Oh, that such our death may be!—
    Died in sleep, and felt no pain,
    To live in happier form again:
    From which, beneath Heaven’s fairest star,
    The artist wrought this loved guitar;
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)
