Head and Neck - Integumentary System

The integumentary system comprises skin, and the appendages of skin, such as hair, nails, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and sensory nerves.

Skin comprises three layers: epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

The epidermis is composed of stratified squamous epithelium and is divided into the following five sublayers or strata, listed in order from surface (superficial) to deep are:

  • Stratum corneum,
  • Stratum lucidum,
  • Stratum granulosum,
  • Stratum spinosum,
  • Stratum germinativum also called stratum basale. The deepest layer is the miotic layer, stratum basale producing daughter cells by mitosis.

Famous quotes containing the word system:

The human body is not a thing or substance, given, but a continuous creation. The human body is an energy system ... which is never a complete structure; never static; is in perpetual inner self-construction and self-destruction; we destroy in order to make it new.
    Norman O. Brown (b. 1913)
