Southern Violence

As the major economic center of lower Southern Thailand, Hat Yai has increasingly become a target of terrorism in the separatist campaign conducted by the Pattani United Liberation Organization and similar radical groups.

On April 3, 2005, bomb attacks were carried out at a Carrefour department store and Hat Yai International Airport, killing two and injuring dozens.

On September 16, 2006 a series of bomb attacks killed four and injured more than 70. No group has claimed responsibility, local separatists are presumed to be responsible.

On March 31, 2012, a car bomb exploded in the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel, killing at least 5 and injuring hundreds. Both Thai nationals and Malaysian tourists were among the victims. The Royal Thai Army believes that members of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) group carried out the terrorist attack.

Famous quotes containing the words southern and/or violence:

When Abraham Lincoln penned the immortal emancipation proclamation he did not stop to inquire whether every man and every woman in Southern slavery did or did not want to be free. Whether women do or do not wish to vote does not affect the question of their right to do so.
Mary E. Haggart, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 3, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

We New Yorkers see more death and violence than most soldiers do, grow a thick chitin on our backs, grimace like a rat and learn to do a disappearing act. Long ago we outgrew the need to be blowhards about our masculinity; we leave that to the Alaskans and Texans, who have more time for it.
    Edward Hoagland (b. 1932)
