Haryana Republican Party

Haryana Republican Party, political party in the Indian state of Haryana. The party was founded on December 30, 2003 when the sole Republican Party of India member of the Haryana assembly, Karan Singh Dalal, broke away. On the same day Democratic Congress Party was founded as well.

Many saw HRP as a quasiparty, whose raison d'etre was to provide a loop-hole for the Anti-Defection Law as Dalal wanted to join Indian National Congress. After the Lok Sabha elections 2004 Dalal merged his HRP with Congress. But the speaker of the Haryana assembly reacted and suspended Dalal (and five other assembly members who had joined Congress) under the Anti-Defection Law. Thus the attempt on behalf of Congress to gain majority in the assembly failed.

Famous quotes containing the words republican party, republican and/or party:

If you believe that a nation is really better off which achieves for a comparative few, those who are capable of attaining it, high culture, ease, opportunity, and that these few from their enlightenment should give what they consider best to those less favored, then you naturally belong to the Republican Party. But if you believe that people must struggle slowly to the light for themselves, then it seems to me that you are a Democrat.
    Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962)

The republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

We are in a period when old questions are settled and the new are not yet brought forward. Extreme party action, if continued in such a time, would ruin the party. Moderation is its only chance. The party out of power gains by all partisan conduct of those in power.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
