Halstead - Education

Education

Halstead is the home to three Primary schools: Holy Trinity, St.Andrews and Richard de Clare, there is also a secondary school The Ramsey College to the north of the town centre which has recently been placed in special measures with the immediate departure of the head teacher. In addition School Governors appointed by Essex County Council have been dismissed.

There are however many schools with Academy status within easy travelling distance with most pupils choosing either Sible Hedingham, Braintree or Colchester to continue their education.

Statistic published by the UK Government for the Ramsey College in 2011 show the percentage of pupils with special needs at 18% of the school population. Only 44% of all pupils attain 5 or more GCSE's at A+ to C. This data suggests a degree of social deprivation uncommon in the relatively affluent South East of England.

Famous quotes containing the word education:

The study of tools as well as of books should have a place in the public schools. Tools, machinery, and the implements of the farm should be made familiar to every boy, and suitable industrial education should be furnished for every girl.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

... education fails in so far as it does not stir in students a sharp awareness of their obligations to society and furnish at least a few guideposts pointing toward the implementation of these obligations.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)

Those things for which the most money is demanded are never the things which the student most wants. Tuition, for instance, is an important item in the term bill, while for the far more valuable education which he gets by associating with the most cultivated of his contemporaries no charge is made.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
