The name of the town stems from the yesteryear name supposedly 'Kudiyetram' which literally means 'a surge in population'. There is also a myth, Karikala Cholan first cleared forest and made people habitat here so called this place 'Kudiyetram'. The supportive evidence for the myth is that the town is populated with Sengunthar community who were of Chola kingdom and other communities karuneegar, and chettiar also living in gudiyatham . The passage of time and most probably British tongues have slowly lead to the now totally incomprehensible name 'Gudiyatham'.
Many archeology excavation done in this town shows that this place was much flourished during Chola rule. Many Roman wine vase and coins were found in the periphery of this town.

Famous quotes containing the words major, educational and/or institutions:
“Lets just call what happened in the eighties the reclamation of motherhood . . . by women I knew and loved, hard-driving women with major careers who were after not just babies per se or motherhood per se, but after a reconciliation with their memories of their own mothers. So having a baby wasnt just having a baby. It became a major healing.”
—Anne Taylor Fleming (20th century)
“Although good early childhood programs can benefit all children, they are not a quick fix for all of societys illsfrom crime in the streets to adolescent pregnancy, from school failure to unemployment. We must emphasize that good quality early childhood programs can help change the social and educational outcomes for many children, but they are not a panacea; they cannot ameliorate the effects of all harmful social and psychological environments.”
—Barbara Bowman (20th century)
“This, our respectable daily life, on which the man of common sense, the Englishman of the world, stands so squarely, and on which our institutions are founded, is in fact the veriest illusion, and will vanish like the baseless fabric of a vision; but that faint glimmer of reality which sometimes illuminates the darkness of daylight for all men, reveals something more solid and enduring than adamant, which is in fact the cornerstone of the world.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
