Famous quotes containing the words greater, manchester and/or police:
“It is sometimes called the City of Magnificent Distances, but it might with greater propriety be termed the City of Magnificent Intentions.... Spacious avenues, that begin in nothing, and lead nowhere; streets, mile-long, that only want houses, roads, and inhabitants; public buildings that need but a public to be complete; and ornaments of great thoroughfares, which only lack great thoroughfares to ornamentare its leading features.”
—Charles Dickens (18121870)
“The [nineteenth-century] young men who were Puritans in politics were anti-Puritans in literature. They were willing to die for the independence of Poland or the Manchester Fenians; and they relaxed their tension by voluptuous reading in Swinburne.”
—Rebecca West (18921983)
“He took control of me for forty-five minutes. This time Ill have control over him for the rest of his life. If he gets out fifteen years from now, Ill know. Ill check on him every three months through police computers. If he makes one mistake hes going down again. Ill make sure. Im his worst enemy now.”
—Elizabeth Wilson, U.S. crime victim. As quoted in People magazine, p. 88 (May 31, 1993)
