Glenelg High School is located in the "west side" portion of Howard County, Maryland. The second high school in Howard County, after Howard High School, Glenelg opened its doors in 1958. The original county championship trophy was called the "Elgard," a combination of the names of both county schools.
The building itself has gone through many changes over the years to cope with the growing population of the west side of Howard County, including the addition of seven portable classrooms, which have since become permanent, a new drama/music wing, and most recently construction on a new science wing and addition to the cafeteria have been finished.
The school is located just west of Maryland Route 32, south of Interstate 70, and east of Maryland Route 97. It is located within residential developments and roads.
