Sixty-five percent of Mali’s land area is desert or semi-desert. According to estimates in 1998, only 3.8 percent of Mali’s area can be classified as arable land, and less than 0.1 percent was planted to permanent crops in that year. Mali was estimated to have 1,380 square kilometers of irrigated land in 1998.

Famous quotes containing the word land:
“The land of shadows wilt thou trace
And look nor know each others face
The present mixed with reasons gone
And past and present all as one
Say maiden can thy life be led
To join the living with the dead
Then trace thy footsteps on with me
Were wed to one eternity”
—John Clare (17931864)
“When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was nearer; for God thought, If the people face war, they may change their minds and return to Egypt.”
—Bible: Hebrew, Exodus 13:17.
