History
The Geographic Board of Canada was founded in 1897. In 1948, the board was succeeded by the Canadian Board on Geographic Names, which was reorganized in 1961 as the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (CPCGN). In March 2000, it became the Geographical Names Board of Canada.
