Fusion Protein - Natural Occurrence

Natural Occurrence

Naturally occurring fusion genes are most commonly created when a chromosomal translocation replaces the terminal exons of one gene with intact exons from a second gene. This creates a single gene which can be transcribed, spliced, and translated to produce a functional fusion protein. Many important cancer-promoting oncogenes are fusion genes produced in this way.

Examples include:

  • Gag-onc fusion protein
  • Bcr-abl fusion protein
  • Tpr-met fusion protein

Antibodies are fusion proteins produced by VDJ recombination.

Famous quotes containing the words natural and/or occurrence:

She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older—the natural sequel of an unnatural beginning.
    Jane Austen (1775–1817)

One is absolutely sickened, not by the crimes that the wicked have committed, but by the punishments that the good have inflicted; and a community is infinitely more brutalised by the habitual employment of punishment than it is by the occasional occurrence of crime.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
