Freshwater Hatchetfish - Flight

Flight

The most obvious trait of the freshwater hatchetfish is their enormously enlarged sternal region. This is accompanied by large pectoral fins and "extraordinarily powerful" associated muscles which "account for up to 1/4 the total body weight". "Quick beats of the pectoral fins" allow hatchetfish to "lift themselves half out of the water and glide along the surface ... Some species can even leave the water for short stretches" Because of this ability to fly and tendency to jump, aquariums used to house hatchetfish should have a cover which is tightly sealed to prevent these fish from escaping.

Famous quotes containing the word flight:

One man’s observation is another man’s closed book or flight of fancy.
Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)

Fear of error which everything recalls to me at every moment of the flight of my ideas, this mania for control, makes men prefer reason’s imagination to the imagination of the senses. And yet it is always the imagination alone which is at work.
    Louis Aragon (1897–1982)

When we are high and airy hundreds say
That if we hold that flight they’ll leave the place,
While those same hundreds mock another day
Because we have made our art of common things ...
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
