History
Freed of London was established in 1929, in by the cobbler Frederick Freed, his wife and an assistant. They had previously been employed by the Italian dance shoe maker Gamba, who was also based in London. Freed had his workshop in the basement of a shop on St. Martins Lane, in Covent Garden and the shop still exists on the site as the only dedicated Freed outlet in the world. In 1993, Freed was taken over by a large Japanese apparel company called Onward Kashiyama, although the company headquarters and manufacturing facilities remain in England at the international distribution centre on Well Street, Hackney, East London. Freed is now the leading pointe shoe distributor in the world and is most noted for being the only leading brand supplying mainly handmade and not machine-manufactured shoes.

“Like their personal lives, womens history is fragmented, interrupted; a shadow history of human beings whose existence has been shaped by the efforts and the demands of others.”
