Fort Lawton Riot - Tribute

Tribute

By the summer of 2008, the army had located two living defendants (Samuel Snow of Florida and Roy Montgomery of Illinois), plus the families of ten others who had since died. King County Executive Ron Sims and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels organized a tribute to the Fort Lawton defendants and surviving families, featuring a dinner, a parade, a formal military ceremony and a Catholic mass honoring the memory of Guglielmo Olivotto. At the military ceremony, Assistant Army Secretary Ronald James offered a tribute, including an apology and the presentation of belated honorable discharges.

Famous quotes containing the word tribute:

    Although my parents have never been the kind to hint around about grandchildren, I can think of no better tribute to them than giving them some.... I can’t help thinking that the cycle is not complete until I can introduce them to a child of their child. And I can think of no better comfort when they are gone than to know that something of them lives on, not only in me but in my children.
    —Anne Cassidy. “Every Child Should Have a Father But....,” McCall’s (March 1985)

    O heart, we are old;
    The living beauty is for younger men:
    We cannot pay its tribute of wild tears.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    His meter was bitter, and ironic and spectacular and inviting: so was life. There wasn’t much other life during those times than to what his pen paid the tribute of poetic tragic glamour and offered the reconciliation of the familiarities of tragedy.
    Zelda Fitzgerald (1900–1948)
