Sound
Their sound was catchy piano pop, influenced by the likes of Elton John, Harry Nilsson, The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Ray Charles, They Might Be Giants, XTC, Randy Newman, and Thelonious Monk, and with their combined love of jazz, they created a very energetic sound with (mostly) upbeat tempos and complicated chord progressions. Because of the prominence of piano in the songs, the band often was often compared with contemporaries Ben Folds Five. However, as Stewart Mason with Allmusic noted:
"Unlike Folds' strained "look at me" cleverness, ivories-tickling leader Seth Timbs doesn't draw too much attention to himself lyrically, and his cohorts... a much more cohesive and musically capable unit than the Five were."

Famous quotes containing the word sound:
“Every now and then, when youre on stage, you hear the best sound a player can hear. Its a sound you cant get in movies or in television. It is the sound of a wonderful, deep silence that means youve hit them where they live.”
—Shelley Winters (b. 1922)
“All sound heard at the greatest possible distance produces one and the same effect, a vibration of the universal lyre, just as the intervening atmosphere makes a distant ridge of earth interesting to our eyes by the azure tint it imparts to it.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“In spite of all her faults her name was so holy to him that it had never once passed his lips since her death, except in low whispers to himself, low whispers made in the perfect, double-guarded seclusion of his own chamber. Cora, Cora, he had murmured, so that the sense of the sound and not the sound itself had come to him from his own lips.”
—Anthony Trollope (18151882)
