Treatment
- Apply an antiseptic cream as soon as you suspect a fissure, to reduce the chances of bacterial infection that would make the condition worse.
- If the skin is already damaged, applying petroleum jelly can prevent healing if used over a period of time.
- A "liquid bandage" can be helpful for healing or prevention, although it may sting initially.
- Use a nipple shield (of rubber, or glass and rubber) temporarily.
This condition should clear within a few days. If not, medical attention is warranted. Other skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, impetigo, fungal infections or an allergic reaction can cause nipple pain and changes in the appearance of the skin. In women, breastfeeding (often complicated by thrush infection),, hormonal changes in early pregnancy or during menstruation, as well as certain types of breast cancer, i.e. Paget's disease of the breast, can also cause nipple soreness and pain.

“The treatment of the incident of the assault upon the sailors of the Baltimore is so conciliatory and friendly that I am of the opinion that there is a good prospect that the differences growing out of that serious affair can now be adjusted upon terms satisfactory to this Government by the usual methods and without special powers from Congress.”
