More than 200 companies have manufactured HDDs over time. But recent consolidations have concentrated production into just three manufacturers: Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba.

Worldwide revenues for HDDs shipments are expected to reach $38 billion in 2012, up about 19% from $32 billion in 2011. This corresponds to a 2012 unit shipment forecast of 673 million units compared to 624 million units in 2011 and 654 million units in 2010 (the drop in 2011 was due to the impact of Thailand flooding on HDD production capacity in late 2011). The estimated 2012 market shares are about 40% each for Seagate and Western Digital and 15-20% for Toshiba.

Famous quotes containing the words manufacturers and and/or sales:

With respect to a true culture and manhood, we are essentially provincial still, not metropolitan,—mere Jonathans. We are provincial, because we do not find at home our standards; because we do not worship truth, but the reflection of truth; because we are warped and narrowed by an exclusive devotion to trade and commerce and manufacturers and agriculture and the like, which are but means, and not the end.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The elephant, not only the largest but the most intelligent of animals, provides us with an excellent example. It is faithful and tenderly loving to the female of its choice, mating only every third year and then for no more than five days, and so secretly as never to be seen, until, on the sixth day, it appears and goes at once to wash its whole body in the river, unwilling to return to the herd until thus purified. Such good and modest habits are an example to husband and wife.
    —St. Francis De Sales (1567–1622)
