Exit Pupil - Digital Photography

Digital Photography

The concept of exit pupil is not often discussed in analog photography, but has become increasingly important in digital imaging. The distance of the exit pupil from the sensor plane determines the range of angles of incidence that light will make with the sensor. Image sensors often have a limited range of angles over which they will efficiently accept light, especially those that use microlenses to increase their sensitivity. The closer the exit pupil to the focal plane, the higher the angles of incidence at the extreme edges of the field. This can lead to pixel vignetting. For this reason, many small digital cameras (such as those found in cell phones) are image-space telecentric.

Famous quotes containing the word photography:

If photography is allowed to stand in for art in some of its functions it will soon supplant or corrupt it completely thanks to the natural support it will find in the stupidity of the multitude. It must return to its real task, which is to be the servant of the sciences and the arts, but the very humble servant, like printing and shorthand which have neither created nor supplanted literature.
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867)
