Notable People

Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt married and produced several of his famous works here, with the doorway linking St Mary's church yard and the grounds of Glyn House being reproduced as the door on which Christ is knocking in Hunt's famous painting, The Light of the World. In addition, the background for John Everett Millais' oil on canvas of Ophelia was painted at Ewell.

Pop singer Petula Clark was born in Ewell, as well as the broadcaster James Whale, and TV presenter Michaela Strachan. Ex Chelsea footballer Ron Harris lived in Ewell during the 1970s, and Trevor "Tosh" Chamberlain (ex-Fulham) still does. Former cyclist Sean Yates is also from Ewell.

Famous quotes containing the words notable and/or people:

    Every notable advance in technique or organization has to be paid for, and in most cases the debit is more or less equivalent to the credit. Except of course when it’s more than equivalent, as it has been with universal education, for example, or wireless, or these damned aeroplanes. In which case, of course, your progress is a step backwards and downwards.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

    But—if you cannot give us ease—
    Last of the race of them who grieve
    Here leave us to die out with these
    Last of the people who believe!
    Silent, while years engrave the brow;
    Silent—the best are silent now.
    Matthew Arnold (1822–1888)
