Evan Michael Tanner

Evan Michael Tanner, or simply Tanner, is the literary creation of author Lawrence Block and appears in eight of his novels. Seven of those were published in the 5 year period 1966-1970; the eighth one appeared in 1998, after a 28-year gap. Tanner is known to have fought in the Korean War, when his sleep center was destroyed by a stray piece of shrapnel, making him a permanent insomniac. He was most likely discharged after this incident, despite becoming an idea of the "perfect soldier"- one who is constantly awake. As a result of his injury, he does not sleep, nor does he need to.

Famous quotes containing the words michael and/or tanner:

I never felt so fervently thankful, so soothed, so tranquil, so filled with the blessed peace, as I did yesterday when I learned that Michael Angelo was dead.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

Is it the lumberman, then, who is the friend and lover of the pine, stands nearest to it, and understands its nature best? Is it the tanner who has barked it, or he who has boxed it for turpentine, whom posterity will fable to have been changed into a pine at last? No! no! it is the poet.... All the pines shudder and heave a sigh when that man steps on the forest floor.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
