European Southern Observatory - ESO's Observing Sites in Chile - Paranal

Paranal

The Paranal Observatory is located on top of Cerro Paranal, in the Atacama Desert, in the northern part of Chile. Cerro Paranal is a 2,635-metre high mountain, located about 120 km south of the town of Antofagasta and 12 km inland from the Pacific coast.

Paranal Observatory has seven major telescopes operating in the visible and infrared light: the four 8.2m telescopes of the Very Large Telescope, the VLT Survey Telescope (VST, 2.6 metres in diameter), and the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA, 4.1 metres in diameter). In addition, there are four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes at the observatory, which form an array used for interferometric observations.

Additionally, in March 2008, Paranal was the location for the filming of several scenes in the 22nd James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace.
