According to the 2001 census, Dunfermline had a total population of 39,229. There are 17,235 households in Dunfermline, 48.4% were married couples living together, 32.4% were one-person households, 8.9% were co-habiting couples and 9.7% were lone parents. The population of Dunfermline is estimated to have grown to around 48,240 in 2010. The demographic make-up of the population is much in line with the rest of Scotland. The age group from 30 to 44 forms the largest portion of the population (23%). The median age of males and females living in Dunfermline was 36 and 39 years respectively, compared to 37 and 39 years for those in the whole of Scotland.
