The woman was old and ragged and gray
And bent with the chill of the Winter’s day.
    —Mary Dow Brine (1816–1913)

One fellow I was dating in medical school ... was a veterinarian and he wanted to get married. I said, but you’re going to be moving to Minneapolis, and he said, oh, you can quit and I’ll take care of you. I said, “Go.”
    Sylvia Beckman (b. c. 1931)

Thirty-five years ago, when I was a college student, people wrote letters. The businessman who read, the lawyer who traveled; the dressmaker in evening school, my unhappy mother, our expectant neighbor: all conducted an often large and varied correspondence. Vivian Gornick (b. 1935)
