History
Founded on July 19, 1881 by Alfred Perry and a group of Protestant clergy and MontrĂ©al citizens, the Douglas Institute was originally named the “Protestant Hospital for the Insane." At the time, Montreal lacked an institution to assist the mentally ill. The founders put an advertisement in the local newspaper to seek funds for a new building to be constructed and local philanthropists offered generous donations
In 2006 the Douglas was designated a University Institute in Mental Health.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“The custard is setting; meanwhile
I not only have my own history to worry about
But am forced to fret over insufficient details related to large
Unfinished concepts that can never bring themselves to the point
Of being, with or without my help, if any were forthcoming.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
“No one can understand Paris and its history who does not understand that its fierceness is the balance and justification of its frivolity. It is called a city of pleasure; but it may also very specially be called a city of pain. The crown of roses is also a crown of thorns. Its people are too prone to hurt others, but quite ready also to hurt themselves. They are martyrs for religion, they are martyrs for irreligion; they are even martyrs for immorality.”
—Gilbert Keith Chesterton (18741936)
“The history of the world is the record of the weakness, frailty and death of public opinion.”
—Samuel Butler (18351902)
