Douglas Family Preserve

The Douglas Family Preserve is a public park in Santa Barbara, California. The Preserve is located on the mesa above Arroyo Burro Beach. The property spans 70 acres (280,000 m2) of undeveloped ocean-front land, and represents the largest area of coastal open space within the city limits of Santa Barbara.

Although the official name of this area is the Douglas Family Preserve (see below), residents of Santa Barbara uniformly refer to it by its older name, the Wilcox Property.

Famous quotes containing the words douglas, family and/or preserve:

How can I live among this gentle
absolescent breed of heroes, and not weep?
    Unicorns, almost,
for they are falling into two legends
in which their stupidity and chivalry
are celebrated. Each, fool and herb, will be an immortal.
    —Keith Douglas (1920–1944)

The family is on its way out; couples go next; then no more keeping cats or parrots.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

In almost all climes the tortoise and the frog are among the precursors and heralds of this season, and birds fly with song and glancing plumage, and plants spring and bloom, and winds blow, to correct this slight oscillation of the poles and preserve the equilibrium of nature.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
