Gruen lives with his wife Dolores, a psychologist who received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. They have two daughters, Erica and Karen, and a son, Jeffery. The Gruens also have six grandchildren: Daniel, Miriam, Anna, Zohara, Aleya, and Benjamin.
