Dedication of Churches
Further information: ConsecrationChurches under the authority of a bishop (e.g. Orthodox, Roman Catholic, or Anglican) are usually consecrated by the bishop but in nonconformist churches a service of dedication would normally be held. The distinction may only be important in some contexts; in the Church of England a consecrated church may only be closed for worship after a legal process (a "pastoral scheme").

Famous quotes containing the words dedication and/or churches:
“It is difficult for me to imagine the same dedication to womens rights on the part of the kind of man who lives in partnership with someone he likes and respects, and the kind of man who considers breast-augmentation surgery self-improvement.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
“I fancy it must be the quantity of animal food eaten by the English which renders their character insusceptible of civilisation. I suspect it is in their kitchens and not in their churches that their reformation must be worked, and that Missionaries of that description from [France] would avail more than those who should endeavor to tame them by precepts of religion or philosophy.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
