See also: United States Senate election in Texas, 2012On July 18, 2011, Dewhurst addressed his supporters in an online video on his campaign website, announcing his candidacy for the vacant U.S. Senate seat for the Republican nomination. His rivals included former Mayor of Dallas Tom Leppert, ESPN college football analyst Craig James and former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz, the eventual nominee.
As the campaign drew close to the May 29 election, Dewhurst launched an attack on rival Ted Cruz claiming that Cruz was soft on illegal immigration and supported "amnesty" for illegal aliens. Dewhurst's attack drew counter-attacks from border security activists in Texas, who criticized Dewhurst for using his position as lieutenant governor to block immigration reform proposals. After much campaigning and over 26 million dollars of advertising Dewhurst lost the nomination to Cruz in the July 31 primary runoff.
