    “On Linden, when the sun was low,
    All bloodless lay the untrodden snow,
    And dark as winter was the flow
    Of Iser, rolling rapidly.”

    “A brush had left a crooked stroke
    Of what was either cloud or smoke
    From north to south across the blue;
    A piercing little star was through.”
    —Robert Frost (1874–1963)

    “As the artist
    extends his world with
    one gratuitous flourish—a stroke of white or
    a run on the clarinet above the
    bass tones of the orchestra ...”
    —Denise Levertov (b. 1923)
